Maker Faire Post #2: "Danger! Will Robinson", proclaimed Robothespian

One of the coolest projects I saw at the Maker Faire was this stationary androidesque robot from Cornwall, UK, called Robothespian. It is fully programmable and has mobility in the upper torso, arms, hands, neck etc. It’s eyes were small LCDs and could therefore be animated to be compatible with other facial expressions generated through the use of motors embedded in the robot’s skull. The whole contraption was mounted on a base that housed a Shuttle style mini PC and the associated control/power circuitry. Lots of pre programmed motion sequences accompanied by sound were replayed for the audience. Including the famous, “Danger! Will Robinson” sequence from Lost in Space, the legendary sci-fi TV series from the ’60s.
Will Jackson, the proud Maker behind Robothespian was present at the Faire talking to members of the audience when not being photographed or interviewed by TV crews. Well, all I have to say is, “Great job, Will!” and next year hopefully Robothespian will be walking around, making friends at the 2008 Maker Faire.
