Part of the COMSTECH Secretariat Building in Islamabad, PakistanThe Associated Press of Pakistan reports that the Saudi Arabian Ambassador in Islamabad, Ali Awadh Asseri, has announced a donation of $100,000 to COMSTECH. This is in addition to the usual financial support Saudi Arabia and other OIC member states extend to the organization.

By way of background, COMSTECH is the Committee for Scientific and Technical cooperation, founded by member states of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in 1981. COMSTECH is active in many muslim member states, including Pakistan. The COMSTECH secretariat is based in Islamabad, and so are associated institutes conducting research in computer science and space science.  In general, COMSTECH institutes throughout the muslim world conduct work in oceanography, alternative energy and other key technology areas.

COMSTECH in Islamabad has, from time to time, attracted and employed some of the leading researchers in the country. Since the IT and Space Science research areas are headquartered in Pakistan, these are the two main disciplines that have been promoted by the Islamabad chapter.The Associated Press of Pakistan reports (full article available by clicking the headline link below):

Saudi Arabia contributes US $ 100,000 to COMSTECH

ISLAMABAD, June 5 (APP): Continuing its support for strengthening science and technology across OIC region, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has contributed one hundred thousand US Dollars to COMSTECH for its programmes and activities in the OIC member states. Saudi Arabia, being one of the most important member states of the COMSTECH, announced its commitment for providing the amount during the 13th General Assembly session of COMSTECH held from April, 1-3 April this year.

The cheque was handed over by Ali S. Awadh Asseri, Ambassador of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Dr. Muhammed Ali Mahesar, Assistant Coordinator General COMSTECH at ceremony held on Thursday at the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia here.
