Dell sees tremendous prospects in Pakistan IT market
Dell has been operating in Pakistan for several years. A recent BR story quotes Dell Pakistan’s management as being extremely bullish on prospects for Dell’s SMB (Small-medium business) growth in the country.
One of the reasons for Dell’s success in Pakistan is the way their largest resellers, DWP, have been executing. DWP’s model is to provide complete solutions layered with end-to-end professional services. Of course, it helps that DWP also resell Cisco, EMC, Xerox, Samsung and Microsoft and have recently become an Oracle partner. Customers get to pick an entire “out of the box” office solution and DWP prof serv comes in and implements it all. Boom. You’re done. In some ways, this is a model that Dell should probably replicate at a larger scale globally. Their Achilles Heel has certainly been the lack of highly skilled professional services and solutions engineering when compared with organizations like HP services or IBM Global Services.
DWP Group has also established a Samsung display production facility on the outskirts of Lahore. Farooq Naseem, DWP’s CEO was quoted not too long ago in a Wired magazine article expounding on the virtues of their partnership with Samsung (at Sony’s expense!)
DWP should be in the $200M annual revenue range now; they are a private company so precise numbers are hard to come by. But based on some inside info, we know they were at targeting close to $120M in ‘06 and were projecting 20+% growth.
The BR reports:
Dell seeks tremendous prospects in SMBs in Pakistan
KARACHI (August 01 2008): Dell has unveiled its innovative products to cater the needs of Pakistan’s fast-growing market of small and medium-sized businesses. The launch of Dell’s product line having the latest features is a landmark development in Pakistan’s small and medium-sized business (SMB) sector.
Director and Country Manager, Dell Pakistan, Ali Jaleel, while addressing the occasion said, “Growing businesses are quickly reaching breaking points where they need high performing and more sophisticated systems. Dell is rolling out its new product line to address the needs of small and medium-sized business customers in Pakistan by using cutting-edge technology.
Pakistan is a thriving market for Dell and we are very excited about the opportunities in SMBs.”, said It is for the first time in Pakistan that Dell is offering a comprehensive suite of products, specially designed for SMBs promising to deliver an exceptional experience and improving return on their technology investments.
The SMB product unveiling include the Vostro line of Notebooks, PowerEdge T300 and R300 tower and rack servers, and PowerVault MD3000i network storage. Dell via its partner will also provide end-to-end support throughout planning, deployment and maintenance of customers’ technology investments.
Meanwhile, Country Manager Intel Pakistan, Ashar Zaidi said, “The launch of Dell’s most sophisticated product line will prove a turning point for the efficiency and output of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in Pakistan and an ultimate experience for the customers. As customers want faster performing systems to run their computer networks, Intel is committed to providing state-of-the-art technology especially for SMBs.”-PR

Hello Mr. Edition, can u pls clarify and confirm the basis of your claim as ‘DWP’ being the largest ‘reseller’ of Dell in Pakistan.
I seriously suggest that you try to get confirmation on this from Dell Pakistan before publishing anything incorrect and twisting the facts.
Just for your information DWP is 3rd in ranking among 4 Dell Distributors in Pakistan after Megaplus Pakistan (1st) and Gerry’s Softlogic (2nd) in ranking.

Asim, I was informally given this information by DWP management. DWP’s revenues are in excess of $100M annually at this time. If your claim about Gerry’s and Megaplus is correct, please provide revenue figures for those companies. I will be happy to make a correction to the article based on your data/sources.

Pls clarify if you are talking about Dell revenue for the specific distributor or total company/group revenue?
Since you have mentioned DWP as largest reseller of Dell therefore I assume that you are talking about Dell specific revenues. I can’t give you exact figures in terms of Dell revenue that Dell distributors are doing due to confidentiality issue, however I have mentioned their rankings along with approx percentage of business they are doing out of Dell overall revenue in Pakistan :
1. Megaplus Pakistan (47%)
2. Gerry’s Soft Logic (30%)
3. DWP Technologies (9%)
4. Unique Technologies (9%)
5. Shahnawaz Limited (5%)
I believe you can do the maths now to figure out who is the largest Distributor of Dell in Pakistan.
Another thing is that majority of DWP revenue is coming from Samsung Televisions which should not be mixed up here otherwise you should include Gerry’s travel agency revenue also in Gerry’s Softlogic and Shahnawaz Mercedes revenue in this comparison.
Let me know if you need any further clarification – pls email me directly ; thanx

I have been trying to call up those idiots u listed as the largest whatever for dell. Here’s the lowdown:-
Megaplus–Karachi-didn’t have the notebook that I wanted, they just have a limited stock–but the the person I talked to on the phone was very pleasant and and accommodating, tried to push me 1510 but i wanted a 1525.
DWP-ring up their Karachi number and you get connected to a TRAVEL AGENCY. Try the UAN and it’s ALWAYS Busy.
Shahnawaz–No love here either. They won’t even pick up the call!
I wanted to buy from an authorized distributor so there wont be problems with warranty.. but i guess thats asking for tooo much!!
I plan to buy from shophive.com –wish me luck!

I have had a HORRIBLE experience with Dell. Bought an 80K Latitude D630, European edition which came with 3 year warranty from makarts.com
Motherboard’s graphic handliing screwed up so I gave it for repair. ETA was 1 week
Makarts has wasted by 100 minutes of mobile talk time and not able to tell me where laptop is and when it will return.
Stick to Acer or HP will decent local team. Screw Dell in Pakistan
Anyone who can help me recover my laptop from Makarts / Dell gets free dinner anywhere in Karachi
April 8th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
should have mentioned – laptop now with Makarts / Dell Partners for 5 weeks
April 19th, 2009 at 11:51 am
As a representative of Makarts, Mr Farzal you are well aware that Dell Pakistan does not cover warranty on your laptop due to non-verification of ownership issue (thats Dell internal affair) which nobody can do nothing..?? Please agree to that.. You probably registered your laptop in some name or format which you have forgotten since the owner name cannot be matched with Dell database. And Dell has that pathetic warranty claim procedure to verify ownership not only in Pakistan but globally.
But wont you’ll agree that in our capacity we have done our best even beyond our efforts to to get your warranty claim from even outside Pakistan using our resources on our own expense. I thinik that should be appreciated. There are times when there are things beyond our control. We usually give ETA depending upon an average turn out time but in your case it was all different.
We will get an update on your laptop hopefully within this week. Will update accordingly.
Regards

An update:
March 6th: Laptop handed over for warranty claim
On April 9th, Mr. Kamran (CEO Makarts) met me and got involved personally. On his own expense he shipped laptop to Dubai to get it fixed.
On May 2nd: Laptop is still in Dubai, still waiting for warranty claim. Neither Makarts, nor the distributor they bought it from, has any idea on how to proceed. Mr. Kamran has followed up on the case with no success so far. They can tell me to fu* off and I will have to get it repaired locally from my own pocket. But they are being nice and resolve the issue.
I continue to use a lower power backup laptop Makarts gave me. Does that compensate not having access to my laptop, data and software for over 2 months?
What’s the issue?
Laptop is originally registered with a ‘name’ that no one knows. It is not mine, its not my companies, its not Makarts, its not dealer that sold the laptop to Makarts.
And Dell’s horrible process for warranty claim in UAE requires that original name be known. This laptop, which comes with 3 year, NBD (Next Business Day) warranty has not been serviced by Dell for 2 months because the owner name in Dell system is unknown to retailer + user.

I think the product must be bought from Asian country (HK), i know these guys just replace memory and other original Dell parts and replace them with 3rd party and so the mbd hangs,,,also they offer with DOS version, when you load a pirated O/S on the notebook it will start giving problem,,,there is no fault from dell

Why i cant see dell Pakistan website on their site? india is there too.
July 27th, 2009 at 5:31 am
Farzal, I have gone through above in detail. I think there is serious issue as I believe MAKARTS did not purchase this Latitude D630 through Dell Pakistan official channel. It was bought from a third country and that is the main reason you are facing problem.
We, Megaplus Pakistan has sold thousands of Dell Laptops and can manage their warranty within 2-7 working days in Pakistan. There is a Dell Parts Exchange Hub in Korangi Karachi where Dell has invested few Million dollars in Parts inventory.
However if you buy your laptop from any reseller who does not provide ‘OFFICIAL WARRANTY CARD’ of Dell then obviously you can’t claim Dell Pakistan for the problems and warranty support. However if you have bought the notebook from legitimate channel in Pakistan then there is no way you will not get warranty covered.
Problem is that lot of resellers buy new/refurbished Notebooks from Dell USA, UK and Dubai and sell them with so called ‘International Warranty’. Let me clarify that ‘International warranty’ means whenever there is a problem in your laptop they will have to send it back to Dubai, USA or UK and get it repaired. On top of this in most cases they repair them locally. You can now understand why it takes ages to fix your notebooks.
Further, someone posted that he couldn’t buy Inspiron from Pakistan. That is true, consumer products of Dell i.e. Inspiron, Studio, XPS etc were not available in Pakistan officially and thus were imported through Grey-Channel. However, now its officially available in Pakistan and you can buy them with 1 year warranty.
Pls feel free to send me email on asim@megaplus.com.pk if you have any questions or queries or need clarification, we will be glad to assist you guys. Alternately you can contact Megaplus Pakistan (Dell Authorized Distributor) on 111-00-DELL [3355].

Assalam alaikum sir,
I bought my Dell Laptop N5010 from Lahore from Unique Distributors, they assured me of One year International Warranty. Now, when I entered the tag number on dell’s site, i was quite surprised to see that there was no warranty associated with this system and it was not registered to any one. I contacted Unique Distributors to register the product, they responded that currently almost all dell system’s are facing this problem. Further they said that dell’s site is yet to be updated to include Pakistan warranty. What do you suggest what should I do?
