Mobilink estimate their Infinity WiMAX service will have 50,000 users by year-end
I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. True WiMAX competition in Pakistan, between Wateen’s existing service and Mobilink’s upcoming Infinity WiMAX offering. It’s only competition that will improve coverage, reduce rates and improve service. Currently, Wateen has the run of the house and to be honest, our December 2007 prediction is going to end up being on the mark; 2008 was not the take-off year for Wateen’s WiMAX, but 2009 will likely be.
Anyway, in a recent interview, Zouhair Khaliq, the CEO of Mobilink Pakistan revealed that their projections for Infinity stand at 50,000 users by the end of the year. That would mean adoption at a fairly decent clip, but this is going ot step up significantly through ’09. The trend here is obvious. Most telecom services will migrate to wireless infratructure. You just have to look at what WLL did to landlines to get a sneak preview. Wired broadband will stick around, but for the mainstream consumer, WiMAX is perfect.
The Business Recorder reports:
Mobilink Infinity to attract 50,000 subscribers
LAHORE (November 18 2008): Mobilink, that has announced the commercial launch of Mobilink Infinity, a wireless broadband and telephony service for residential and enterprise consumers based on the mobile WiMAX standard, estimates the service will attract 50,000 subscribers by the end of the year.
Mobilink Infinity went live on October 22 in Karachi, Pakistan’s financial capital and major business centre. In its very first week, the service attracted several thousands of subscribers. ‘When choosing a partner for Karachi commercial launch, time-to-market and product readiness were key decision-making criteria,’ the President and CEO of Mobilink Zouhair A Khaliq said, adding that the company saw Alcatel-Lucent as one of the most advanced WiMAX players. The maturity of their technology and the quality of their support have been excellent throughout the project.-PR
