Rakesh, iterative improvements account for something, yes. However, experience has shown that for Web 2.0 properties in particular, adoption is either very rapid, or it never happens. Rapid adoption doesn't wait for a site to even leave the alpha or beta stages. MySpace had been around for longer, Facebook was the new kid on the block. But the growth of Facebook - being the less mature application - was so rapid that it is exactly twice the size of MySpace today. How long was it before Twitter became a run-away success?

What you are saying may hold true more for enterprise applications, but the Web 2.0 space demonstrates the exact opposite.

Agreed that it is easier with easier availability of resources you mentioned and things like Amazon's EC2, it is far easier to enter a market but still there are barriers-to-entry. Invested time in developing product in particular domain being one crucial one. With development cycles gone rapid, a house with more iterations based upon user feedback is in position of doing much better than one just entering. Specially in Web 2.0, competitiveness lies in how fast you learn from the way your service is used.

That accounts for something, right?

Although I think the concept of VC is a good one, I've never been a fan of VC in IT startups, simply because there is (in the vast majority of cases) no need for it...It all seems to end up getting spent on plush offices or unneeded MBA folk.

And like you said, capital is no longer a barrier to entry, which gives the developer in Pakistan the same shot at success as the developer sitting in Silicon Valley, which can only be a good thing!
