The amazing awesomeness of PTCL's EV-DO wireless broadband

PTCL's EV-DO service is sweeeet!
The communication infrastructure in Pakistan, both wired and wireless, is quite incredible. There’s one pet pieve I’d had for a while though, and that’s the lack of inexpensive, true mobile broadband in Lahore. WiMAX is available, but I haven’t come across a USB dongle from Wateen so far. Their rates are also a bit on the higher side, with download caps and other nonsense. WiTribe and Mobilink are offering their services in Karachi only at this time. I’ve tried Telenor’s Edge USB dongle and PTCL’s WLL USB mobile. The former is too slow for full-fledged web surfing, video watching etc. and the latter – though a bit faster – is too clumsy. You end up having to plug-in a mobile WLL handset, a candybar phone, into your USB port. The thing hangs out and hampers mobility. I just don’t like it. And it delivers only about 20Kbps. Just not worth it.
So, imagine my surprise when I tried out PTCL’s new EV-DO service. I paid Rs. 8,000 for one-time connection and hardware purchase charges. I got a sleek looking, black EV-DO wireless USB dongle with an extensible antenna, that happens to go perfectly with my T60. The dongle has a built USB storage, so all I had to do was plug it in and the setup program started… from the dongle itself! Pretty cool. It took me about 5 minutes to run through the install, and boom! I was in business. My first stop was google.com, which loaded instantly. I could already see the difference in performance but I decided to measure it a little more objectively. Speedtest.net is always handy for that.
Speedtest detected that I was coming in from Lahore and using PTCL’s Triple Play network. It automatically selected Islamabad as the closest server site that I should run broadband tests against. But I wanted to be a little more adventurous – and realistic. I picked a few sites in the US since many of the websites I use are hosted there. That would be a true performance test, I thought to myself! And here’s some snapshots of the results I got.
![]() Speedtest results for PTCL EV-DO |
![]() Speedtest results for PTCL EV-DO |
Pretty insane! I’m getting 2.28Mbps downlink from Texas and 1.57Mbps from New York! I thought this was too good to be true so I reran the tests multiple times. The results were in the ballpark each time. Over the next couple of days I tried the tests at different hours of the day. No difference. These are real!
I did notice that the latency was somewhat higher than I would have liked, but unfortunately that is one of the issues with wireless systems like EV-DO. You pay a bit in the latency department for the bandwidth and mobility it gives you. Further study of the EV-DO spec does indicate that Rev 2 (or B?) optimizes latency somewhat. I am not sure whether PTCL has their transponders upgraded to this spec. It’s a software-only upgrade, so if they don’t already, I hope they do this soon.
The monthly charges for PTCL’s EV-DO service are a flat Rs. 2,000. Only $25! That’s half of what you pay Time Warner for fixed Roadrunner cable and about 1/4th of what you pay AT&T for an unlimited package on an AirCard. The value and performance are just amazing.
I’m a convert, if you can’t tell. I think this is PTCL’s best service offering since they launched WLL a few years ago. If you need to be mobile and require high-bandwidth access, PTCL’s EV-DO is indispensable. Get it today!

Do they have a download limit?
April 26th, 2009 at 3:25 am
No they don’t. Unlimited download @ Rs. 2K/month.
April 26th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
It Really is that amazing. So far the service is only available in larger cities. I took the dongle for a test on the motorway on my way to Faisalabad; the internet worked flawlessly but at 1x cdma which still seemed faster than edge on mobilink or telenor(using bluetooth dialup)

Sir can you please work on quality of pictures. Pretty unviewable, isnit it
April 28th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
The image is not a “USB dongle”; Badar also used a PCMCIA card based product.
Can you clarify?
April 28th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
They are offering worst speed in Islamabad. Unbearably worst. They really need more towers in here. I wonder when will those chicken hearted investors-World Call Wireless will come in ISB.
April 28th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Yes, the image is a PCMCIA card. They have both options; I chose USB because this way I can use it in netbooks that don’t have PCMCIA expansion.
April 30th, 2009 at 4:16 am
Oh wow I had been waiting for the USB Device, so my home PC can use the Net when i leave for Office. Is the price same for PCMCIA and USB.?

Dear blog owner, now a days ptcl is suffering with connection problem and DNS failures.
May 12th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Hmm. Works fine for me. If you have a DNS failure, set your primary to the PTCL DNS and your secondary to one of the open DNS servers (Google open DNS and you’ll get a bunch of addresses).
That way you’ll have a backup in case your ISPs DNS is flaky.

Does this USB thing work in Linux?
June 7th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Daud, probably not. But there is a trick you can probably employ. Install VirtualBox or VMware server on your linux box and create a lightweight XP virtual machine. Allow the VM to take control of the physical USB port. Plug the USB device in and have it enumerate to the Windows XP session. Once that’s done the Windows XP virtual machine should be online via the PTCL connection. Now, just use connection sharing on the VM and then use the VMware/Virtualbox virtual adapter on the Linux box as your default route to the internet… the physical linux box will receive a DHCP address from the XP VM… make sense?

i am using ptcl evdo device its really suck im using local dsl before that was way better then evdo usb just right now im testing evdo speed on speed, net downlink is 0.46 mb/s and uplink is 0.19 mb/s i am really getting mad on this connection im pretty sure in near future i will contact with court must be sue against ptcl once at 2.45 am i get high speed 1.52 mb/s but never n ever again. at Saturday evening speed was so low can’t even open any page i complain on their help line they just note and make promise don’t worry it will ok in 24 our 5 days left but result is same so what can i ask ptcl evdo is just suck pain for users that all they r liar i want to get my money back how can i do need reply how can i get my money back
June 17th, 2009 at 3:36 am
Only rich people can afford these charges. Here people are paying 400 rupees/month for 128 kb/s LAN connection. Only cheap or free internet can keep people online without dreadful electricity load-shedding.
June 17th, 2009 at 6:29 am
better then any other service i have experienced after ptcl land line internet service.
I’m sticking with PTCL rather then worldcall, worldcall wireless phones are worst while wateen has a good service but limited on download.
Hopefully we would would have 16 Mbps as Airtel offers in India.

ev-do is ultra bad not only speed is slow 400 – 1.2 mb but latency is very high 400 ms which is very baad

I have just got the PTCL EVO and I found it wasn’t downloading anything at the 3.1 Mbps and when I checked their website I found that the device will only download between speeds of 300 kbps and 500 kbps… So what is this 3.1 Mbps all about? Is PTCL deceiving us? At least I am deceived.
I am planning to get another USB now with the committed speeds of more than 1 Mbps and unlimited transfers.
PTCL Sucks big time on this one… (Check out their website.)
July 22nd, 2009 at 12:11 pm
HI, I just got the EVO Device. Sitting in the office and it is not moving.
I am getting paltry 2.5 Kbps download. I tried it at home, at some places it went upto 50 Kbps. I tried it at PTCL office and it gave me upto 200 Kbps. So result is that you should buy this device and open your office right in the PTCL office for it to work.
I think I am going to return this device.
July 24th, 2009 at 11:24 am
PTCL EVO is dead slow! I purchased the PCMCIA device for my laptop in early June ‘09. It was really very fast during the first 2 weeks but after that time it’s just been getting slower and slower every day. Mobility was my first priority, more than speed, but now it has become so slow that even simple browsing is a pain. I think PTCL has sold too many connections and doesn’t have the infrastructure to support the growing number of users.
July 24th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I ran a speed test on http://www.testmy.net and the results for PTCL EVO are as follows:
Test Result Details
Your connection is: 110 Kbps or 0.1 Mbps
You downloaded at: 13 kB/s
You are running: 2 times faster than 56K and can download 1 megabyte in 78.77 second(s)
Member Ident: CompID:1092695012150
Test Time:: 2009/07/24 – 5:24am
Test Browser and OS info: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; GTB6; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
Test ID: AKZBGP6I3 (if this is a screenshot go to testmy.net to see if this is fake)
Diagnosis ^info^: May need help : running at only 1.29 % of your hosts average (19.139)
This was tested from a 4096 kB file and took 304.562 seconds to complete
Now that is SLOW!

Thanks

I m a broadband internet user, and i m currently using wateen. Talking about ptcl Evdo, it is stated to be at a 3.1mbps bandwith. well! previously i was using paknetl dsl 256kbps, and i kept wondering, y does it downloads at a meagre ~25kbps. I checked at there office, and i was told that your download speed is always 1/8 of your connection speed. So what they meant was that, being at 256kbps bandwith will not give me a download speed of 256kbps, but actually i will be getting roughly 1/8 of it as download speed, which in this case was around 25kbps. So coming back to ptcl Evdo, it will not be giving a download speed of 3.1mbps, but something around 300-500kbps. Now I haven’t used it, and judging by the people’s feedback, i figured its not that good. Well, if you are a static user, like in home or office, then wateen is pretty good for you. Its wireless, with very low latency, and partially mobile since you can use your wimax device anywhere within your city. I m using 1mb unlimmited, and with minimum telephony (telephony is a must buy as it is bundled with internet) i get charged for Rs.1620/month. The download speed various around 100kbps. Its good to have it, ofcourse if you can afford it.
August 9th, 2009 at 10:40 am
my suggestion is not purchase ptcl usb dongle, it is very slow,it is speed lower than 512 kb, and my sugestion for my all friends don’t purchase it,Mobilink infinity is best than evdo
August 9th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Thanks for your input, Javed. But what would be really helpful is if you shared some comparative download/upload performance data. Preferably using the same site (speedtest) used in the review so there’s an apples-to-apples comparison available to everyone. Without any data purely subjective comments tend to get less consideration since one never knows whether its just the vendor promoting itself…
August 14th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
I bought this EVO USB stick last week. In my office we can only open govt sites so i had no option but to buy this EVO. Unfortunately speed is not what i was expecting. I still have Linkdotnet 1mb broadband connection at home which i think is giving me same speed as like this EVO. The speed this EVO is giving to me at my home in rwp and office in isb is same there is no diff. On avg i am getting around 512kb not more than that. And i am wondering why i paid so much money for this crap. Can you guys tell me anyother better option with unlimited download.
Cheers
August 20th, 2009 at 11:08 am
Dear Blog Owner,
I am bit cinfused about ptcl evo i have received mixed reviews about the service. Are you still getting the same speed’s? where is lhr do you live I mean the area?
August 20th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
TsAr, in general the more densely populated the area, the greater the chances that EV-DO performance will suffer. When subscribers increase the towers have to carve up wireless bandwidth less generously. I don’t have any major problems with EV-DO. It continues to work fine.
August 21st, 2009 at 8:33 am
Well, I have been trying to get Evo for over two weeks now but without success (and that is kind of putting me off).
I first went to the PTCL customer service center and asked if I could get it. They said sure but I needed a copy of my phone bill and a copy of my NIC. Of course they have no copy machines so I had to try and find one in the neighborhood. I couldn’t. Later on that day I got the copy and went over the next day to find out that they had runout of the usb device and I was asked to come back two three days later. I thought I’d give them more time and went back the fourth day but this time I was told “Sorry we are still out of stock” and upon inquiry I was told I out to forget about it for another week at least.
Not wanting to wait that long, I thought I’d try the 0800-80800 line (that was last saturday morning) and I was told “no problem!” and that they would call me back in 15 minutes for “confirmation”. SIX hours later someone finally called and I was told the device would be delivered to me in 3 working days, meaning by last wednusday at the latest. Of course Wednusday passsed and i did not hear from anyone at PTCL. Thursday (yesterday) I called and after explaining the whole thing and giving my order number, I was told my order had been “forwarded” to the “concerned department” and the guy at the helpline promised someone would call me soon to update me as to why my order was delayed.
Well, it’s been 24 hours since and yet no call. Of course no PTCL guy has yet shown up at my door….
P.S. It certainly is clear that the 3.1 Mbps is a mirage and i was told by the PTCL staff that I will never get that speed. That 3.1 Mbps is really denotes the speed of the device rather than the speed of the connection. And the speeds I get today will get worst with time as the connection is a “shared” one, so the more the number of people getting Evo in my neighborhood, the slower my connection will get.
I did find a good discussion about it at http://www.wiredpakistan.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=3366 . It has a lot of user input and seems the experience people are having is all over the place…
August 26th, 2009 at 6:50 am
This PTCL EVO is total fraud. Unfortunately in my office i can only browse govt websites so i was left with no other option to get this evo crap. And its dam slow. I dont know why PTCL is charging so much. Is there anyone to ask them why they mugging people. I am thinking of moving to Wateen.
August 26th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Sorry to hear it. Please share your wateen experience with us if possible. If you can upload a snapshot of the speedtest.net bandwidth test when you move to Wateen, it will be helpful to a large number of people…

Hello friends can somebody tell me who is the best USB Internet provider in Pakistan. I live in Karachi and used to travel a lot. I know World Call is providing USB internet but for Karachi I have to use one device and for Lahore I have to buy another. Is there service provider offering a nationwide USB internet (other than PTCL) like telenor, warid or zong….
Would appreciate an urgent and effective response. JazakAllah

can anyone tell me whats the DNS server address for PTCL EVDO for Rawalpindi??
September 28th, 2009 at 11:10 am
Hi everyone!
If someone is ready to buy a wireless usb connection so dont ever buy of PTCL! It is one of the worst broadband internet connection. I have taken its test drive in ptcl gulshan office and when downloading a setup from Microsoft website, it downloades with the speed of 45 -60 kbps. Can you believe it?
They call it 3G Wireless Broadband which they say its a 3.1 MBps connection. Its just a shit!
3.1 Mbps means that a user should get at least 200-300kbps!
Therefore its a flop invention of PTCL!!
PTCL DSL Broadband is far more better than it!
WorldCall in wireless is much bore better than PTCL. On a 256Kbps connection it gives 30kbps
Regards,
Zohaib
October 9th, 2009 at 7:09 am
I think PTCL’s dsl is the best when it comes to speed. Wimax has signal strenght issues and is not exactly mobile.
EVDO by worldcall/ptcl offers better mobility but speed isnt as good as dsl so it’s for those willing to compromise on speed in lieu of mobility…u can take your evdo stick to the major cities and get a much better speed than dial up but hardly as good as dsl.
Anyway I am all for PTCL’s Double Up Limited that gives me good speed and unlimited voice calls on PTCL network

I am living in Canada, I typed Oracle Pakistan and find techlahore blog.
I left karachi, pakistan in 2007, since then I never had a chance to come back
from canada. In pakistan I used internet very frequently and have many bad memories related to the same. I used cybernet, digicom, world online, compol and perhaps many others exsist in the market, at that time the single source of internet was via phone and the phone lines were managed by the ptcl, owned by government.
As I read different post on techlahore website, I can tell that the high speed internet is still a dream in Pakistan.
I am using internet in Canada since 2007 and it is the best, I never had to call once
to technical support. I have a basic internet connection and getting around 50-60 KB per second with 2 GB data transfer per month which cost me around 20$.
I hope that things will be change in pakistan in future, inshallah.
December 23rd, 2009 at 2:55 pm
I don’t know what you’ve been reading, but between PTCL EVDO, three WiMAX services and Worldcall EVDO we’re doing just fine, thank you. I am not discounting the specific issue you might have had with your connection two and a half years ago, but generalizing that to the country is a little extreme.

Any one tell me what is the speed of w-tribe in now days ? also anyone tell me Now in Jan 2010 what is the speed of PTCL EVDO in Karachi..? its still same slow or they modify there system to increase EVDO speed?
January 14th, 2010 at 8:19 pm
PTCL EVO Sucks… Speed not more than 512kbps connection with average download speed of 50 to 60 kbps per second and too much fluctuating speed.
Its really a bad idea to pay Rs.2000 per month for such Rubbish device
January 17th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
PTCL EVO is really bad. They also give returned EVO dongles to new customers. I ended up with one last Saturday. It crashed my computer with some virus. So after an XP reinstall, fresh OS and fresh installation of EVO, BOOM! Again the damn thing tried to screw with my OS. Thats after I scanned and removed the virus. I figured it was down to USB modem conflicting with every serial port, network connection… toaster etc.. etc… Oh when it breifly worked it to give a crappy speed of 0-30kbps (NOT even 30kBps). It might of been good at the begginning, but i get better speeds by connecting my BB8900 to my laptop via Bluetooth.
Final Verdict:
ITS SHIT!!!
January 18th, 2010 at 12:19 am
Sorry to hear you are having such a bad experience. I don’t think your virus troubles are related to the PTCL device… there is a slight chance that you received a returned/RMA’d unit which had a non-standard image and somehow a virus got in there in addition to the installer. But I highly doubt that.
As for speed, EVO/EVDO is extremely dependent on the number of subscribers in any given area. If there is a densely packed area with lots of people using the technology, the speeds will come down.

I got my EVO usb yesterday here in Quetta, and i if you ask me i would beg you not to buy this garbage 3.1 mbps is a bluff that ptcls marketing team came up with.
Totally waste of money, performs like the dial up and download speed it 30 kb max if you are sitting on their antenna. I will return it today and get my money back and also i will report this fake scheme to PTA.

ptcl evo is just piece of garbage.i am using this sucking device in u.e.t lahore hostels and can u believe its downloading speed is less than 50 kb/sec.its a sincere advice not to purchase this device.

Lies, Lies, Lies and now some more LIES!
its a piece of trash, literal garbarge! it has ALMOST made me cry! It has made my whole month terrible and miserable! I am a value for money kinda consumer and this bad decision has kept me regretting nights! I have had headaches becuase of this bullshit device and all this is NOT JUST because it sucks, BUT BECAUSE I WAS LIED TO ABOUT IT! thts the worst part! I have been cheated and I can’t do anything about it! this is what kills me the most! more than anything their marketing campaigns are misleading and deceitful! The help centre ppl simply accept and say yes sir this is the kind of speed we offer, we do NOT promise exact 3.1 Mbps, we just say its possible in a perfect situation…theoretically speaking, that is!
the speed I actually get is only 40 Kilo Bites Per Second…..and that is on a GOOD DAY! WTF!!!!!
and Mr. TechLahore, you’re even worse than PTCL, you know this is a scam product and still are trying to convince ppl to buy this piece of crap???? this scam??? how much are they paying you to sell your morals??? what? thts it! THAT CHEAP! Shame on you guys for being a part of this scam!
EVERYONE PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD, THIS EVO IS A SCAM AND A LIE! CONDEMN IT! THE ADS ARE ALL LIES!!! I BEG OF YOU ALL, PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!!!
p.s. techlahore, maybe its time you revisit this page AFTER retesting the evo!
May 15th, 2010 at 1:19 am
oh and btw, the 40 kilo bites Per Second shitty speed is ON THE EV-DO MODE!!!!
May 15th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
What do you mean by lies? The performance snapshots shown above are taken from a real functioning EVDO session. You may be in a congested area where TDM issues are causing loss in throughput to your endpoint from the local transponder.

Today I (unfortunately) got into this EVDO scam. Despite being convinced just by reading the reviews, I gave it a last thought and decided to burn my hard earned cash on this so called the net revolution. In short I was utterly disappointed and infurated at what I experinced. EVDO should be laid to rest atleast for the timebeing. “PLEASE, PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS” (IT DOESNT EVEN DESERVE TO BE CALLED THRASH OR CRAP)

I have been using ptcl evdo usb for quiet some time now and the speeds are amazing BUT it the coverage is not, also since i have both the old zte usb and the new huawei usb aswell please keep in mind that the older zte usb the one with the folding antenna will give you way better performance than the huawei one one of the reasons for it to my knowledge from a friend in ptcl is that the equipment used in exhanges and towers are zte and the huawei devices dont work as smoothly with the zte equipment as the zte usb does … and yes i have experienced speeds up to 2.8 Mbps in good signal areas and atleast 512 Kbps in the not so good signal areas … if you compare it to other providers in terms of the price per month and the unlimited download speeds … ptcl is far ahead of the competition.

I would like to hear reviews from people living in Lahore. If anyone from lahore please share their thoughts. I am planning to buy PTCL Evo. I already have Worldcall USB and it really sucks from last month. Now I have 2 options in unlimited either go for PTCL Evo or Wateen USB Dongle..
