@Maria, personally when I interview engineers I give far more importance to what they’ve done, as compared to any references they might have. If you don’t have references, consider putting in some extra effort to complete a couple of projects that will impress your would-be employers. If you have a BS in EE perhaps you can implement an interesting micro-controller based project that’s a little different to the run of the mill stuff you see on most resumes. Consider developing a micro-controller based game interfaced to an LCD or RCA display. There are several good starting points on the web that will make your job simple and I think you will impress people with stuff like this on your resume.
